Why was sand removal from play area stopped? 11 Jan 2012

After lot of deliberation on the "sand removal from play area" subject, it was decided, that we will remove the sand and leave it blank until we get fresh sand within affordable cost of Rs.15000.

But now I heard from our Manager, that the removal was stopped after a kid got hurt, when the kid climbed up the blank swing and fell down.

"The sand removal was initiated for health reasons and we mentioned that the apartment residents and parents of kids, are responsible for the safety of their kids and well being until the time the sand is replaced."

I am planning to ask the Manager to start the sand removal process starting from Monday if no one objects to this process. If you have any objections please let us know why and if the reasons are something new other than the statement above we will discuss and find a way of how to mitigate your concern and then continue with the job.

  1. Hi Ranga,

I have a suggestion, given that we do not have direct sunlight coming into the play area, I don't see a healthy environment even after replacement of the sand. (unless you are planning to replace the sand periodically)

Also, leaving the play area without the sand and having the items in place, just creates more problems than solving. We already have a situation where a kid got hurt.
Why don't we remove the play items as well ?. We can have an empty space that can be used as shuttle court or a place where we can conduct classes for kids.
I have spoken about this to couple of mothers atleast and they all seem to be in agreement.

    Thanks

  2. Hi Kaplana,

I agree with your comment and I am also fine with removing all the equipment. I can understand that the space will become more usable and productive.

I would like all the core members and at least 5 other members of the apartment management to agree with this suggestion to make this happen.

I would like all the other residents to share their thoughts about this suggestion.

    Thanks,
    Ranga.

  3. Getting the sand replaced every year costs a lot for us. Why can't we just get rid of the sand and find an alternate one time solution for that.
How about covering the play area floor with rubber or synthetic layer(You may have seen some playcourts covered with synthetic layer other places).
I am not sure how much it costs, but it may the right solution if it is one time spending. Just my thoughts.

  4. Thank you for the thought and your participation in the discussion. Everything other than leaving an open cemented floor has overheads and maintenance costs.

The rubber flooring is also expensive to the tune of Rs.2.5 lacs or something in that range. There was research done by one of our apartment members about this.

The synthetic flooring only lasts for only few years and as it is an open space which attracts dirt and rain sprinkles from the top the durability goes down.

I forgot who it was. If anyone knows what would be the cost to convert the flooring to a rubber flooring please give us your thoughts. if it turns out to be affordable we will think about it in the future.

  5. I am definitely fine with removing the play equipment if the sand is not going to be there. Its a lot more riskier without the sand for the kids, and if the sand is not going to be replaced or maintained well owing to cost aspects, we better remove all of them and use the area for a better purpose. As I had suggested in one of the earlier meetings, we can probably look at the option of converting it into a shuttle court (would certainly look as a value addition to the apartment). We can also look at moving some of the play equipment to the front of the building near the lawn so that the kids are not totally devoid of their entertainment.

  6. I completely agree to Kalyan's view of moving the play equipments to the front of the building and converting the current play area to a shuttle court or even leave it empty for now.

  7. Covering with a synthetic turf or rubber matting might be costly but we can certainly consider painting the shuttle court borders lines and erecting a net; that certainly is not going to cost anything significant

I agree with Kalyan, having a badminton court is a good idea.

I also support the idea of moving all our children play equipments to front of the lawn, with this our garden area will also become more lively.

Kaushik (earlier committee incharge of our garden, gym area) had also suggested the same, however we were not able to get a larger consensus on the same.

I also support the badminton court idea, as this been a hidden enclosure it will be good for badminton.

Further there are added benefits of this area been utilized more aptly for Ganesha puja, for our meetings, for some more fun activities to children like some classes, skating, Dance floor and list can grow.

Would appreciate if all the residents comment on this and help reach a larger consensus.
There will be a need to formulate guidelines as to when this area should be utilized for all the above purposes and when it should be kept vacant for all the residents to have a quite atmosphere especially when majority of the folks sleep.

    Best Regards,
    Rahul.

    Dear All,

The best part of this discussion is that no one is objecting to the fact that the sand should not be removed. So far everyone is fine with removing the sand and then following it everyone is fine with removing the play area equipment as well to make it a badminton court.

I will instruct our Manager to continue with the sand removal process from today.

  12. 1. no sand (thumbs up)
    2. enclosed badminton area sounds great (thumbs up). can double up for basketball and likes.
    3. moving kids equipment to the front garden area. This could be a safety issue with kids being closer to the gate. (neutral)
