Elevator/lift painting completed - Mar 3 2012

Dear All,

With some creative thinking from Kaushik and under the guidance of Kaushik, in co-ordination with Vinodkumar, the elevator (Lift) painting was done during the last few weeks and the elevators now look very nice. Kaushik, thank you for the work and effort in completing this.

The general house keeping money was utilized to procure the painting materials and to complete this job.

After the completion of this activity Naveen came to me and requested that he be taken care for the extra effort that is put in completing this job. I feel it is fair to  paying him something when he has put some effort in taking care of this. What is a good amount to pay Naveen?

1. Rs.500
2. Rs.1000

Please send me an email directly.

Thanks,
Ranga.

  1. From VInod:

It was purely Kaushik's idea and implementation. So all credit goes to him.

I got couple of quotes and one was for 5k each lift. Second one for around 3k / lift. However, last time when it was painted, it was done by Sujit and he also did for very nominal price. Worth checking with him as well.

I feel, we can pay him anything from 1.5k - 2k.

Note: copying Kaushik and Sujit also to this thread as I felt relevant.

    Kind Regards,
    -vinod.

  2. Please check on the amount that was spent in the process of painting and probably that will give you an idea of what to pay him on a prorata basis. From what I was updated by Vinod, the cost of the paint was somewhere in the range of Rs. 500/- and going by that basis labour can at best be equal to that amount if not lesser. This is strictly my personal opinion and obviously am fine with whatever the committee thinks is appropriate.

  4. I want to know who did the painting. Is it Naveen or one of the Security Guard?
Please make sure the person who did the painting is paid.

In one mail someone(I guess Vinod) asked how much we spent on painting last time. If i am not wrong it was 4500/- for 3 lift. The work they did at that time were - removing old paint, smoothing the wall with sandpaper, painting with machine spray. Can't recollect cost of the paint was included in 4500/- or not.

    Regards,
    Sujit

  5. Appreciate Kaushik for his creative thinking.
Appreciate Ranga for bringing this important aspect for a larger discussion to the common forum.

More than money, I also feel that all residents should appreciate Naveen when they meet him on taking initiative and doing this job.
This will be an encouragement for him to be proactive on other aspects in future also.

I also go with Kalyan that it can be in the range of 500/- odd or so.
But more important is, if we want it to be done on a regular basis, we need to have a defined logic for paying him.

    My recommended logic:
    ===========================

Now when we know what it involves in terms of material cost, it will also be good to fix something on the labor cost as well.

When it comes to labour, there would be aspects of amount of effort the person has spent just in painting; toughness of the job – smell of the paint and so on; then further co-ordinating and ensuring that nobody enters the lift while painting and subsequent so that it gets sufficient time to dry up.
Looking at the current condition of lift paint, I believe that our supervisor Naveen has taken care of the above aspects and kudos to him for a job well done.

Further, I got a chance to enquire with him, how much was his core effort in terms of painting time to paint each of the individual lifts.
He mentioned it took him about a hour to paint each of the lifts.

This is what I propose as logic that we need to mention to our supervisor while paying him:
    - 150/- per lift * 3 = 450/- + 50/- bonus for taking the initiative and it comes to a total of 500/-

    - And in the process if Naveen took help from some of the security guards or someone else in doing this job, we should enquire what kind of help it was, whether it was outside the persons regular job responsibility and if it deserves some payment from the society. Based on that we can give whatever 50/- or 100/- rupees to that person also.

Also it is important for all to know that we are paying our supervisor around 8000/- a month, approximately 260/- rupees a day.

    Thanks & Regards,
    Rahul.
